Abstract

Elderly people (elderly) are those aged over 60 years. They experience a decline in health, both naturally and due to disease. Non-communicable diseases often arise in old age due to the decline in physiological function due to the aging process. Non-communicable diseases in the elderly include hypertension, diabetes mellitus, stroke, and rheumatism.

The climacteric is a transitional period that begins with the end of the reproductive process and ends with the beginning of senile age. It occurs in women aged approximately 40 to 65 years. This period is characterized by a variety of endocrine and vegetative symptoms. These complaints include a decline in ovarian function, one symptom of which is the cessation of menstruation in women, known as menopause.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is an asymptomatic condition characterized by increased blood pressure in the arteries. A person is considered to have high blood pressure if their systolic pressure while sitting is ≥140 mmHg or their diastolic pressure is ≥90 mmHg, or both (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2021). Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia caused by abnormalities in the insulin action mechanism, insulin secretion, or both. Classic symptoms of DM include polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and unexplained weight loss.

The community service activity began with a climacteric education session, followed by a demonstration of diabetes exercises, and then blood pressure and blood glucose measurements in the elderly.

The examination results showed that more than half of the elderly (22) were categorized as pre-hypertensive, while 38 (88.37) were categorized as normal, 3 (6.98) as pre-diabetic, and 2 (4.65) as diabetic.

Based on the general evaluation of the interventions carried out in this community service activity, it was found that the majority of the elderly understood and were motivated to care about preventing hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Further recommendations for the continuation of this activity include strengthening community health center cadres to continue providing knowledge and guidance on preventing hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
