Abstract
Osteoarthritis is one of the 10 most common diseases worldwide and a leading cause of disability in developing countries. It is estimated that worldwide, 9.6% of men over 60 and 18.0% of women have symptoms of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis in older adults, usually due to pain, can lead to disability. The less frequently a joint is used, the weaker and stiffer it becomes, potentially increasing the risk of falls. To prevent this, education on self-administered preventative measures and a good exercise program can be provided as early as possible, when the patient's condition permits. One way to prevent osteoarthritis is by providing education on physical exercise. One way to reduce pain from osteoarthritis is through Osteoarthritis Knee Exercises. The community service activity began with a pre- and post-activity pain scale measurement, followed by education on the concept of osteoarthritis, followed by a demonstration of osteoarthritis knee exercises as a form of knee pain management in the elderly. The results of the examination, based on the pain scale, showed that most elderly people were categorized as having moderate pain (23 elderly people (76.6%). Based on the general evaluation of the interventions carried out in this community service activity, it was found that all elderly people understood and were motivated to care about knee pain management. Further recommendations are for this activity to be continued regularly by the cadres to ensure that the elderly do not experience activity limitations and thus prevent the risk of falls. Keywords: elderly, osteoarthritis, pain, risk of falls.
